Damiana (Turnera aphrodisiaca) is a small shrub with aromatic leaves between 10 and 25mm long that thrives in hot and humid climates and is native to Mexico, Central and South America and the West Indies. The leaves are used to make a distinctive and fragrant tea. Damiana was used as an aphrodisiac by the ancient Mayans, and for over a century it has been used by the modern populations of both Central and South America as a way of strengthening the body. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia (1983) suggests it may be helpful for 'anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor, depression, nervous dyspepsia...and coital inadequacy'.
